President Joe Biden said he “doesn’t know yet” whether he will run for re-election in 2024.
Biden was asked in an interview on “60 Minutes” aired on Sunday whether he had made a “hard decision” about aiming for another four years in the White House.
“Look, like I said at the beginning, my intention is to run again. But that’s just the intention. But is it a solid decision for me to run again? We don’t know yet,” Biden said. .
CBS correspondent Scott Perry pressed the president over whether Biden’s commitment to serve a second term would depend on “certain conditions.”
“It is too early to make such a decision. I’m going to do it,’ he said. “And after the next election cycle here, make a decision on what to do within a timeframe that makes sense for next year.”
The president’s remarks were a departure from his previous position that he would run for office again, despite the fact that he is expected to serve until the age of 86.
Biden reportedly told former President Barack Obama earlier this year that he dearly plans to run again to defeat speculation that he will retire.
But some Democrats say the president should hold the younger generation accountable in the White House.
“I think people want some change,” Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Tim Ryan said earlier this month. “I think it’s time for a generational change. Of course, I’ve been trying to do that for a while.”
Republicans are questioning Biden’s mental focus, who turns 80 in November, making him the oldest president in U.S. history.
“I respect the fact that people say, ‘You’re old,'” the president told Perry.
“But I think it has a lot to do with how much energy you have and whether the work you do is consistent with what a person of any age can do.
He dared his critics to “see” him.
“Look at me. And honestly to God, that’s all I think. Look at me,” Biden said. “If you think I don’t have the energy levels or the mental acuity, that’s one thing. That’s another thing, you just watch and stick to my schedule. I’m doing When I sit with my NATO allies and I’m with them, I don’t think they’re saying, “Wait a minute, how old are you?” ”
“What do you think your mental focus is?” asked Perry.
“Oh, I’m focused. I think it’s–I–I’m not–see, I’m having a hard time even mentioning my own head, years, to myself.” Biden said. “I don’t consider myself to be as old as I am, rather than fly. It doesn’t look like it does now.
